The Simpson Desert, about 500km southeast of Alice Springs, is Australia's largest sand dune desert.
In the 1960's, it was explored for oil and a number of tracks were created, which make the desert today accessible for the adventure seeker.
The shortest crossing from west to east stretches about 400km and is characterized by vast dune fields, red sand, spinifex grass, shrubs and salt lakes. Crossing the Simpson Desert transfers you into one of the most remote areas in Australia and is only possible in the cooler months of June to September.
