Australia crashes into the Southeast Asian plate
The Austral-Asian forest evolves
About 15 Mill years ago, Australia crashed into the Southeast-Asian plate on its journey to the north. An exchange of plants between tropical Southeast Asia and Australia is possible via Papua New Guinea and existing land bridges during the ice ages. The Southeast Asian immigrants and the 120 Mill year old
heritage from Gondwana
form new communities, the tropical and subtropical rainforests of Australia's East Coast.

Immigrant from Southeast Asia, a Strangler Fig.
|
Strangler figs become huge trees and are the result of undisturbed development of the plant communities in subtropical rainforest for several thousand years. Strangler figs like this one can be found in Dorrigo National Park, which we visit on our tours.
