cover about 366 000 ha. Fortunately, due to the rugged terrain, this area has largely avoided exploitation and modification by humans. Its pristine state and the diversity of flora and fauna were crucial for its listing as World Heritage in 1986.

Australia crossed mainly three climatic zones on its journey north: cool and warm temperate, and subtropical. Usually, life not adapted to the new climate becomes extinct unless it can find a climatic niche in which it can survive. In the CERRA group, it has found just such a niche. The Parks are located along mountains which rise like islands from the surrounding country. Animals and plants could survive the climate changes on Australia's northbound journey because they found refuge in the specific topography of the Great Escarpment. CERRA Parks are therefore a living archive of the evolution of plants and animals over more than 120 Mill years.
